Friends of Wonky Tree Read...

We always love chatting to you about books that you have read. If you, or anyone in your family has enjoyed a book that you have bought from The Wonky Tree we would love to hear from you. Please email your review to info@thewonkytreebookshop.co.uk and we will share them on our new page.

Dead Line - Steph McGovern

Steph McGovern shares her knowledge and experience as a professional TV broadcaster while giving us a gripping and intense storyline of a broadcaster being hijacked on national television while interviewing a famous politician. There is also a wide spread of interesting characters who you get to learn the backstory of.

I really enjoyed this book as it keeps you second guessing where the storyline is taking you and what the outcome will be. It keeps in line with a thriller theme but also contains parts that are humorous. If you are into crime and mystery, I would definitely recommend this book.

Publishing July 3rd 2025

Willis

Prophet - Helen Macdonald & Sin Blache

What I enjoyed about "Prophet" was how thrilling a read it was. It mixed the good, the bad and the ugly of the characters' stories with the uncanny horror of what Prophet does perfectly. It was difficult to put down as I wanted to unravel the mystery and get answers! I thought it was an excellent blend of sci-fi, horror and mystery.

Nicolas

Twilight - Stephenie Meyer

Twilight is my most favourite book franchise ever!

The first book starts with Bella Swan moving to Forks to live with her dad Charlie Swan. Moving houses also means moving schools, and in her new school she becomes quite fascinated by an odd group of students, the Cullens. One of the Cullens stood out the most to her, Edward Cullen. However, he and the Cullens have a secret they all share, they're all vampires.

There are 5 books in this amazing series and as you read each book, the more intense they will become. I highly recommend these books if you love vampires, cheesey teen romance, and fantasy books!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - J.K. Rowling

I love the Harry Potter books, but the first one is my favourite and, in my opinion, the best one!

In this book, after being stuck with his horrid aunt, uncle and very spoiled step-brother, Harry starts his first year at the wizarding school of Hogwarts. Here he learns about how he can improve his wizarding abilities and much more. He makes friends and becomes quite popular amongst the other students - but for a certain scar he has on his forehead which reveals a dark past...

If you're into books that have mythical beasts, wizards and some action in them, then you should most definitely give this book a read! And if you enjoy this one, you're 100% guaranteed to enjoy the rest of the books in this amazing franchise!!

Where the Heart Should Be - Sarah Crossan

I really enjoyed this book!

Although surprising at first, I loved this book's structure. It was in free verse and I thought that it gave the overall story a lot more meaning, considering the topics included. In my opinion, the portrayal of innocent, young love in times of injustice, extreme hardship and famine made it even more moving.

Despite the overall plot being a predictable romance one, I found this story engrossing and I wanted to know what happened to the characters. I liked the historical links but mostly enjoyed the romance. A great read minus the very sad moments in the 2nd half. The honest and thoughtful narration from Nell, the main character, made this book a great success for me!

Skandar and the Unicorn Thief - AF Steadman

This book is one of the best I have ever read. It also got me into the series and I have read all three books. I found the trials most enjoyable because it really brings you into Skandar’s world.

If you like bloodthirsty unicorns, your adrenaline pumping and some heartbreaking experiences then READ THIS BOOK!!! Even if you don’t like any of those things you should still try it.”

Einstein the Penguin and Einstein the Penguin - The Case of the Fishy Detective ~ Iona Rangeley

"These are great books and the only stories I've heard about a penguin. The nasty man doesn't get what he wants and Imogen and Arthur get Einstein back, which is good. I like Imogen and Arthur and I wish we could have a penguin like Einstein come and stay with us" Poppy age 8

"I like lots of elements of these two books. Firstly the author really understands children and the book is very much set in the present day so the children borrow mum's laptop to find out information rather than looking in a reference book or an encyclopaedia. There is a great deal of kindness in the book but it doesn't shy away from the reality that children are sometimes suddenly excluded from a friendship group and that makes them feel sad. When Imogen has not been truthful she worries about it because she knows its wrong and I love the way she works out why she has probably done the right thing but she tells her mum too. There are some lovely cameos of family life and it is a very funny book. We are looking forward to the third book."

Adventures with a Yorkshire Vet: The Lucky Foal and Other Animal Tales - Julian Norton

"This book is about the author Julian and his pet dog Emmy. Julian is the Yorkshire Vet mentioned in the book’s title!
The stories tell about the challenges he has faced treating lots of different animals, not just the foal from the title, but cows, sheep, pigs and more.
I like that this book has lots of different stories as each chapter is its own complete story, and I especially like that these are stories that have really happened. I also like that Emmy the dog features in all the stories: she’s a really helpful brown and white spotty dog.
I think people who like real life stories of animal rescues would really enjoy this book."
