On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. He's celebrating the success of his lakeside holiday homes, and has generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbours. By midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.
On New Year's Day, DC Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects. She grew up in the tiny community, so the murder suspects are her neighbours, friends and family - and Ffion has her own secrets to protect. With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn't who wanted Rhys dead…but who finally killed him.
This is the beginning of a new series starring DC Ffion Morgan and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. I love Clare’s books, they are real page turners and keep the reader guessing. Great characters, gripping plot and an unexpected twist at the end. If you have enjoyed any of Clare’s other books, this is bound to be a sure fire hit!
The Essex Dogs return in this gripping sequel. It's 1347. Bruised and bloodied by an epic battle at Crecey, six soldiers of fortune known as the Essex Dogs pick through the wreckage of the fighting and their own lives. Now a new siege is beginning, and the Dogs are sent to attack the soaring walls of Calais.
King Edward has vowed no Englishman will leave France til this city falls. To get home, they must survive a merciless winter in a lawless camp deadlier than any battlefield. Obsessed with tracking down the vanished Captain, Loveday struggles to control his own men.
Romford is haunted by the reappearance of a horrific figure from his past. And Scotsman is spiralling into a pit of drink, violence and self-pity. The Dogs are being torn apart but this war is far from over.
Exciting, raucous and unsurprisingly informative from one of the country's foremost historians.
Christopher, visiting his reclusive grandfather, is stunned when he discovers a passage to the Archipelago: a cluster of magical islands where all the creatures of myth still live and breed and thrive in their thousands. There he meets Mal: a girl from the islands, who is in possession of a flying coat and a baby griffin, and who is being pursued by a killer.
Together they embark on an urgent quest to discover why the creatures are suddenly perishing, voyaging across the wild splendour of the Archipelago, where sphinxes hold secrets and centaurs do murder, in a bid to save both the islands and the world beyond them from a rising evil before it's too late.
This is a glorious book, and the magical imagined world that Katherine Rundell has created is spectacular. A brilliant adventure story for readers aged 9+. I loved it! A well drawn cast of characters, both human and mythical, and the rich writing captivated me. Christopher and Mal’s quest for the truth is an absolute must read - it’s enchanting!
"True friends are always there, even when times are tough." - Rob Burrow.
The moving affection between rugby legends, fundraising heroes and best friends Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield has inspired and uplifted the nation. With You Every Step is a celebration of friendship, in their own words. In this truly special, pocket-sized gift book, heartfelt words from Rob and Kevin are brought to life with artwork from leading illustrators, to create an inspiring and hopeful celebration of love, support and connection.
A wonderful book to give to someone special in your life, young or old. Inspiring and moving. Highly recommended.
Twenty years after leaving London, Nina Stibbe is back in town with her dog, Peggy. Together they take up lodging in the house of writer Deborah (Debby) Moggach in Camden for 'a year-long sabbatical'. It's a break from married life back in Cornwall, or even perhaps a fresh start altogether.
Debby does not have many demands - only to water the garden, watch for toads, and defrost the odd pie - so Nina is free to explore the city she once called home. Between scrutinising her son's online dating developments, navigating the politics of the local pool, and taking detergent advice at the laundrette, this diary of a sixty-year-old runaway reunites us with the inimitable voice of Love, Nina, as the writer becomes, as she puts it, 'a proper adult' at last.
An enjoyable insight into the life of a writer depicting London seen through the eyes of a ‘visitor’. NIna is very good at the minutiae of life and writes honestly and with warmth. Witty observations, lots of name dropping and gossipy anecdotes. An open, light hearted account about her time in London.
Cristabel Seagrave has always wanted her life to be a story, but there are no girls in the books in her dusty family library. But from the day that a whale washes up on the beach at the Chilcombe estate in Dorset, and twelve-year-old Cristabel plants her flag and claims it as her own, she is determined to do things differently. With the adults blithely distracted by their endless party guests, Cristabel and her siblings, Flossie and Digby, scratch together an education from the plays they read in their freezing attic, drunken conversations eavesdropped through oak-panelled doors, and the esoteric lessons of Maudie their maid.
But as the children grow to adulthood and war approaches, jolting their lives on to very different tracks, it becomes clear that the roles they are expected to play are no longer those they want. As they find themselves drawn into the conflict, they must each find a way to write their own story...
Joanna Quinn’s debut novel captivated both of us - a gem of a historical novel - compelling, immersive and moving. Strongly drawn characters, brilliantly researched and superb writing. An epic story spanning the First and Second World Wars. Glorious - our book club loved it too!
A life in 99 particles - DROPOUT. PACIFIST. PHYSICIST. CASANOVA. REFUGEE. REBEL. GENIUS.
His face is instantly recognisable. His name is shorthand for genius. Today, he's a figurehead as much as a man, symbolic of things larger than himself: of scientific progress, of the human mind, even of the age. But who was Einstein really? In 99 unforgetable stories we are given an insight in to the mind of the man who was not only a genius but a human who was clearly greater than the sum of his parts.
A fascinating book - I found it enthralling and inspiring. An unsual way to create a biography from 99 short chapters you can dip in and out of, each showing a different aspect of Einstein's unique nature.
A magical coming-of-age story about a boy spending his first weekend without his parents... and the lion who comes to babysit him. Oscar is a little terrified to find that a lion is going to be looking after him for the weekend. But when the lion lets him eat as many biscuits as he wants, and reads him his favourite story ten times, Oscar realises he might be on to something good. Soon, Oscar discovers that the lion can change into different animals and the pair find themselves having all kinds of adventures!
A heart warming story, which sensitively handles issues such as bullying, loss and war. Captures a child's thought processes and imagination perfectly and is beautifully illustrated by Benji Davies. Sure to delight many readers!
It's the Fourth of July weekend at the prestigious West Heart country club. Gathered for cocktails on the first evening are just some of the guests: the club president, the treasurer, the snooping schoolboy, the bereaved father, the taciturn caretaker, the prospective member... And there will also be a body.
And a private detective. And a fiendish mystery to solve. But everything else is all to play for.
And you are about to find out that you have a role to play in this mystery too... West Heart Kill is an outrageously original and imaginative murder mystery that is both a love letter to the greats of classic crime fiction and a brilliant puzzle the likes of which you will never have read before. Really enjoyable - a clever idea, well executed!

Michael Rosen never disappoints and this is a beautiful uplifting book with stunning accompanying illustrations by Daniel Egneus.
My first delve into the novels of Alice Hoffman and definitely worth it!
Ivy, sixteen and pregnant is cast out by her parents and banished to a cult. Into this claustrophobic life daughter
Mia is born. Whilst out serving the community one weekend she secretly commits a transgression - reading.
The book takes the reader in some very unexpected directions moving through different timelines, but go with it.
Ultimately it shines a light on the power of books to open new worlds, illuminate and empower change. Enchanting!
By the summer of 1660 the last remnants of the Republic have been swept away and the Stuarts have been restored under their king, Charles II. Gruesome executions begin to take place and the hunt intensifies for those who have gone into hiding at home or abroad. Royalist spy, Lady Anne Winter, is employed to find evidence of guilt or innocence among the names on this Winter List...
With great characters and scene setting it is hard not to be transported to York in the 1600's, and experience the fear and trepidation of being on the losing side. This is a pacy and compelling story.
Winner of the British Book Award for Children's Fiction Book of the Year 2023!
Adam has found something incredible in a rubbish dump in London. A mysterious, mythical, magical animal. A TYGER and the tyger is in danger. Adam and his friend Zadie are determined to help, but it isn't just the tyger's life at stake. Their whole world is on the verge of destruction. Can they learn to use their powers before it's too late?
An engrossing read set in a dark dystopian future of a British Empire where slavery, racism and segregation are the norm. Powerful narrative and amazing black and white illustrations ensure this captivates the reader and the relationship between Adam and the tyger is heart warming and engaging. Reminiscent of CS Lewis’s Aslan, Tyger is a mesmerising character, and ultimately the story encompasses a positive vision of hope and resilience.
Recommended for 10+ readers.
One dog changes the life of everyone who takes him in on his journey to reunite with his first owner in this inspiring tribute to the bond between humans and dogs and the life-affirming power of connection. Following a devastating earthquake and tsunami, a young man in Japan finds a stray dog outside a convenience store. The dog's tag says "Tamon," a name evocative of the guardian deity of the north.
Over the course of the novel we follow Tamon as he touches the lives of each of the very different individuals who welcome him into their home. The search for his beloved first owner Hikaru from whom he has been tragically separated since the tsunami, takes Tamon on a five year journey.
A charming novel encapsulating the love and loyalty between dog and owner - this is a heart warming and feel good story of survival and resilience.
Our favourite octaganarian murder mystery crew are back with a bang! A friend is murdered and a valuable package is missing; and whilst the National Crime Agency take over the case officially, in the background the Thursday Murder Club are making far more progress. But with the body count rising fast who will be the last devil to die.
This is Richard Osman's best story yet - it is funny, gripping, and in more than one way surprisingly heart-wrenching. I was enthralled and couldn't put it down.
All of them are guilty of something... Five friends. One deadly secret.
Five old university friends gather on the eve of their flatmate's memorial at a beautiful riverside house.
Estranged for years, they're finally ready to reminisce over dry martinis and delicious food. But there's more than that on the menu... Because each guest is hiding a dark secret about their time at Oxford.
This kept me turning the pages! An entertaining read that keeps revealing its secrets until the very end!
As the story begins we meet the protagonist Cathal as he journeys home from an uneventful day at work, his mind drifting to Sabine the woman he had a relationship with and was set to marry. As he reflects on his relationship, (and as Keegan leaves clues and hints for the reader) Cathal is forced to accept that his misogynistic behaviour towards Sabine contributed to the end of their relationship.
A short, but interesting read, with beautifully written descriptive prose. Cathal’s frugality with love and generosity ultimately cost him dearly.
Set in post referendum Yorkshire, two families are on different sides of the bitter Brexit divide, although the tensions and arguments at home give them much in common. What they don't know is that their eldest children, Rachid and Jodie, are about to meet for the first time and fall in love. Aware that neither family will approve, the teenagers vow to keep their romance a secret.
But as Sylvie's family feel increasingly unwelcome in England, a desire for a better life threatens Rachid and Jodie's relationship. Can their love unite their families - or will it end in tragedy?
Linda Green explains “I wish this novel hadn’t been inspired by real- life events, but it was. The murder of Jo Cox MP affected me deeply…”
This is an emotional read which is both thought provoking and heart wrenching. Powerful and compelling it is a story about family, love, hate, acceptance and wanting to belong, but ultimately it is a story about humanity and the hope that love engenders. I couldn’t put it down and it had me in bits!
1926, and in a country still recovering from the Great War, London has become the focus for a delirious new nightlife. In the clubs of Soho, peers of the realm rub shoulders with starlets, foreign dignitaries with gangsters, and girls sell dances for a shilling a time.
The notorious queen of this world is Nellie Coker, ambitious to advance her six children. But success breeds enemies, and Nellie's empire faces threats from without and within. For beneath the dazzle of Soho's gaiety, there is a dark underbelly, a world in which it is all too easy to become lost.
Kate Atkinson has created a world containing a glittering cast of characters and the reader becomes caught up in the world of Soho clubs and the Coker family, led by the ruthless and determined Nellie.
A great story, depicting the heady world of London nightlife and the corruption of the police force in charge of fighting crime. My only disappointment was the speed with which all the loose ends were wrapped up at the end -I wanted more!
A year in the charming landscape of French Charente. The limestone buildings and the light blue shutters come to life with one of the best nature writers as he buys an old farmhouse in arguably the most beautiful area of France and takes us through a year of cultivation of the farm.
There is so much to learn and enjoy in this book - nature; french language and customs; recipes; social etiquette.
The beauty of this book is in every paragraph of poetic prose.
Tuuli is a prehistoric girl, travelling with her tribe through the seasons - making camp, hunting for food and protecting themselves against the many hazards that the climate throws at them. Tuuli knows there's a bigger world out there, and when she spots a strange boy lurking outside their camp, she realises that he might hold the adventure she is looking for.
A vast adventure with a very human heart, full of wild animals, huge scenery and heart-stopping danger and inspired by real anthropological discoveries.
This is a really great book for 10+ readers and adults alike. There is a lot to learn from Alice Roberts and this story presents our history in an accessible way with much that echoes attitudes of today.
The first time Romeo Montague sees young Rosaline Capulet he falls instantly in love. Rosaline falls for Romeo’s sweet talking and hopes he will be her ticket out of the convent her father is so desperate she joins.
She breaks off the match, only for Romeo's gaze to turn towards her cousin, thirteen-year-old Juliet. With only hours remaining before she will be banished behind the nunnery walls, will Rosaline save Juliet from her Romeo? Or can this story only ever end one way?
A subversive, powerful untelling of Shakespeare's best-known tale, narrated by a fierce, forgotten voice: this is Rosaline's story.
I loved this new feminist re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet. Rosaline is a fantastic protagonist, fiercely independent and fiery, determined to live her life her way.. I was totally engrossed - this takes everything you thought you knew about Romeo and Juliet and completely turns it on its head!
A multi-generational novel depicting the lives of four generations of women shot through with Ruth Jones’ wit, warmth and humour. As Grace approaches her 90th birthday she is desperate for her family to heal the rift that has kept them apart for so many years.
It’s a real page turner and the characters are drawn with strength, insight and warmth. In turn moving and joyful, it relates the heartache and pain that miscommunication can bring.
This is a fantastic summer read - definitely one to pack in your suitcase!
I've been meaning to read this book for ages - I'm only sorry it has taken me so long.
An epic, emotional, breathtaking story of love and loss set amid the Syrian revolution.
It gives a human face to the atrocities that the people of Syria faced, told from the point of view of 18 year old Salama, wrapped up in a beautifully moving story full of hope and spirit.
This is an important book - you need to read it and then tell a friend!

This is the new breathtaking novel from Ann Patchett.
It's spring and Lara's three grown daughters have returned to the family orchard. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the one story they've always longed to hear - of the film star with whom she shared a stage, and a romance, years before.
Tom Lake is about the all consuming love of youth and the love of married life and family that develops over time. The gentle lyrical storytelling takes the reader on a journey alongside the family and reflects on the true nature of happiness and how we know and appreciate when we find it. It is a moving, quiet and uplifting story and is beautifully written. If books about family and relationships are your thing, you'll love it!
England, 1645. After his half-brother dies, aspiring playwright Nicholas Pearce is apprenticed to Judge William Percival, an infamous former witch-hunter who is under pressure to resume his old profession. Peggy and her twin sister Maude work at the book bindery in Oxford. Peggy dreams of studying but has to reconcile her dreams and aspirations with the realities of living in a country at war. The war brings women together from all walks of life, and with them some difficult choices for Peggy.
This compelling story portrays the horrors of war and the deprivation and yet it also illustrates the new freedoms and opportunities that arose for women as a result. As the war draws to a close will the women struggle to give up their hard won freedoms?
A vivid and well researched historical novel illustrating a pivotal period in women’s history.
For Alice and her partner Joe, moving to the sleepy Cotswold village of Penton is a chance to embrace country life and prepare for the birth of their unexpected first child.
But with a death at their antenatal class, suspicion falls one by one on many of the NCT group and their loved ones. Determined to clear their names and to find the culprit, Alice and this unlikely band of third trimester mothers-to-be find there are many linked secrets in Penton, centred on a local hippy commune.
This is really fun whodunnit, with a very original cast and setting. Although I found it a little slow in the early stages there was lots to occupy my curiosity and I found the humour very funny. The book gathers pace as it goes, and by the end I was gripped by the twists and turns.
A very humourous book with laugh out loud incidents and an interesting insight in to pregnancy and familial love.
London 1754 - Zachary is the bearer of an extraordinary gift; at the touch of a hand, he can see into the hearts and minds of the people he meets. Raised by his devoted father, a near-fatal accident will take Zachary away from his father’s workshop and his family. Sent to live with his aunt for his protection, Zachary’s safety is again threatened and as a result his father embarks on a journey he may never return from. Years later, only Zachary can discover the truth.
An excellent historical novel and a great adventure story. Ultimately about love and finding your place in the world. An intriguing read, beautifully written and thoroughly engrossing.
This grimly fascinating book is brilliantly pieced together from original research using coroner's inquests, court records, parish archives, letters, diaries and the cheap street pamphlets that proliferated to satisfy a voracious public.
Blessin provides real insight into the attitudes and draconian laws of Early Modern Britain through a series of gripping tales of true crime. She explains the forensic and deductive work used to unravel the evidence and the societal and religious attitudes that added confusion to each case and misery to those involved.
This is a real page-turner that moves with pace despite the intricate details in some sections.
I would heartily recommend this illuminating book - a real must read!
When Sam catches sight of Sadie at a crowded train station one winter morning he is catapulted back to the brief time they spent gaming together as children. Their unique spark is instantly reignited. What comes next is a story of friendship and rivalry, fame and creativity, betrayal and tragedy, perfect worlds and imperfect ones.
This is a novel about connection: through friendship, love, creative working partnerships and gaming. It spans thirty years and examines how friendship has to adapt as time passes, fame and wealth are thrown into the mix and people change. Sadie and Sam are caught between the two worlds of gaming and real life, frequently escaping into the gaming world to dodge the realities of everyday life.
Don’t be put off if you are not a gamer. I found it really interesting to be immersed in such a creative world, and totally invested in the lives of the characters, flaws and all!
Stuart Maconie walks in the footsteps of J.B. Priestley's classic travelogue, English Journey, to explore our national identity and how it has evolved over the last century. On his way, Stuart takes inspiration from the people he meets at bus stops and train stations, cafes and corner shops.
With his usual wit and easy style, Stuart affectionately observes the changes across the country between the 1930's when JBP toured to the current day, the history of the industrial north and the demise of much of that industry and the northern powerhouse as it once was.
A fascinating read - I would recommend this to everyone who is interested in the life and history of regional England..
One summer following the second world war, Robert Appleyard, sixteen and the son of a coal miner, leaves his Durham village and sets out on foot eventually reaching Robin Hood’s Bay. There he meets Dulcie, a worldly, eccentric older woman living in a ramshackle cottage facing the sea.
Despite their differences the two strike up an unlikely friendship which will profoundly alter both their lives.
This is a gentle coming of age novel. Myers allows his characters to experience and indulge in the simple pleasures in life; good food, company and connecting with the natural world whilst living and trying to come to terms with lasting regrets. A tender story of love and friendship that conquers the barriers of age, class and gender.
A really enjoyable read.

A cosy, enchanting book, perfect for readers of 8+.
Leonard and Hungry Paul is a heart warming gem of a book. The story of two friends who pass their time with humour, kindness and playing board games. The novel is a testament to friendship and the joy to be found in little things. One cannot be helped but invest in the lives of Leonard and Paul, they are relateable and wholly likeable characters. Hession's writing invites you to celebrate the simple moments in life.
This novel is like taking a breath - it provides an oasis of calm. Beautifully written... it's like a hug in a book...just give it a try.
I'm Rani Ramgoolam - roving reporter. And I think I've found the perfect story for the junior journalism competition run by the local paper.
An eccentric millionaire has created a treasure hunt with a reward for the first person who figures out the clues. Luckily, my mischievous Nani is visiting from Mauritius. She's promised to help me work out what a priceless painting, a minotaur and a glass eye have in common.
This is a really enjoyable story - can resourceful Rani and the fearless energetic Nani solve the clues before time runs out, especially with some people resorting to devious methods to get their hands on the prize. Rani and Nani are an absolute delight, and make a great puzzle solving duo. First in a new series, I can’t wait for the next installment!

I loved this story - super characters, humour and fast paced ‘who dunnit’ for kids. This is a cracking adventure showcasing the power of friendship and family. If you love solving mysteries, then this one’s for you!

Lily lives with her guardian, Gabriel in the City of Undone. Undone is a dark and dangerous place to live especially if you are an Other: feared for their special gifts, they are persecuted by the Master of the City and imprisoned in the Ring from where few ever return. When the Master captures Gabriel and throws him into the Ring, Lily is rescued by Dekka, a young Other boy who introduces her to a whole Otherworld that exists below the City of Undone. Lily discovers she too is an Other with special gifts and her life is in danger as the Master wants her dead. But why? Will Lily discover the truth and rescue Gabriel with the help of her new friends, before it is too late?
This is a great read for those aged 10-12. It is a dark, yet exciting fantasy adventure, which examines themes of belonging, family, friendship and trust. Lily is a truly likeable protagonist: gutsy, determined and fiercely loyal, she overcomes fear and adversity, and in doing so discovers who she really is. If you (like me) love stories that keep you on the edge of your seat, then Lily Grim comes highly recommended.
This novel is a great read. Atmospheric, verging on the gothic with beautiful story telling. Spanning the twentieth century this is a bittersweet novel about forbidden love, control, secrets and family.

An intriguing story which was a real page turner...totally captivating!
I'm not really sure how to do this book justice in a few sentences. I love Rachel Joyce's writing and my what a heart felt story she has written about Maureen! Reading the book and experiencing the journey that Maureen makes alongside her, is a real privilege. Maureen sets off to try and reconnect with her life. She is not a people person (unlike Harold) and Rachel manages to portray her sense of prickliness beautifully. She is abrupt and awkward and yet as reader you cannot help empathise, feeling her pain and sense of failure as she attempts to accept her past, come to terms with her loss and move forward into the future. This novel is full of warmth and about finding love and kindness in unexpected places. Above all it is about acceptance and strength, and how we cope with all that life might throw our way.
The end of a fantastic trilogy...highly recommended. (You'll definitely need tissues!)

A gem of a book! Demonstrating the nurturing power of nature and community, it is a life affirming story full of hope, healing and friendship. Published on June 8th.
I recognise that I am late to this party, but I finally got round to reading this best seller...it was worth the wait!
It is an ordinary Thursday and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club is concerned.
A decade-old cold case leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers. Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill...or be killed.
As the cold case turns white hot, Elizabeth wrestles with her conscience (and a gun), while Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim chase down clues with help from old friends and new. But can the gang solve the mystery and save Elizabeth before the murderer strikes again?
Another cracking story from RO. The depth of the characters builds and builds as the books develop, as does the cleverness of the mystery.
As far as I'm concerned any book by Michael Rosen is a sure fire winner and this is no exception.
Goldilocks and her dog are off on an adventure, looking for that house again - the one with the bowls and chairs and beds. However, distracted by the call of the sea, they find themselves in the middle of a very different adventure and meet some rather funny and unexpected characters!
This is a funny take on the classic traditional tale and is complimented by brilliant illustrations by David Melling. Michael Rosen works his poetic genius - the story encourages active listening and is sure to become a firm favourite.
Now in paperback!
This is a beautiful picture book for toddlers, a gentle story with gorgeous illustrations by Kate Greenaway medal winning artist Catherine Rayner. A tale of friendship between Molly, Olive and Dexter based on a well known childhood game. Molly loves playing hide and seek, but what happens when her friends hide too well?
There's to be a new series featuring Molly, Olive and Dexter so this might be the first story of many well loved tales. I really can't stress enough how beautiful the illustrations are - Catherine has an amazing ability to capture emotion with just a sweep of her brush. It's an absolute delight!
Marvin is a boy who owns a super suit that has been passed down through his family. When he puts it on he becomes MARV the superhero. His friend Joe invites Marvin to Wave World for his birthday treat, but Marvin has a fear of the water and worries that he will feel The Panic. While Marvin is trying to find any reason not to go in the water, supervillain Hydro takes over the pools with her robot sharks. Marvin needs to overcome his fear before he come defeat Hydro.
The story is well written, and explores feelings of fear and courage. Marvin's friend demonstrates both patience and understanding, as well as a real sense of pride in his friend’s alter-ego.
A great book for 6+ readers which delivers a positive message about overcoming your fears.
A beautiful story of a boy who has battled to care for and protect his mother who has mental health issues. She goes into a hospital for a while and he moves to the US to be with his grandmother. There he meets Marina who is a whale watcher and her father owns a whale watching boat.
They search for a whale called White Beak whom his mother drew as a small girl. Rio has a close encounter with White Beak and is smitten.
When White Beak is lost by the whale watching community, Rio and Marina decide to save her by stealing Marina’s father’s boat.
They find White Beak trapped in netting and drowning…Can they save her? And what will become of Rio and his life in California.
This book is beautiful in its seeming simplicity, but the story is so compelling and the plight of White Beak so well written that it moved me to tears reading of the desperation of Rio, and the imminent death of the whale. I would recommend this book to people all day long.
Skandar Smith, Nestling Unicorn Rider, wielding the might and magic of the Spirit element, with his quartet enter their second year at the Eyrie, with the backdrop of wild unicorns being murdered, a brewing fear of spirit wielders, and the Island itself in distress.
But who or what is the Phantom Rider and can the quartet hold together as their hopes and fears for their futures build.
These books are truly fantastic… full of fast paced adventure, suspense, mystery and bloodthirsty powerful flying unicorns. We couldn’t put these books down and now can’t wait for the next. It’s so easy to be captivated by this fantastical world that is so carefully, and thoughtfully pieced together. It has the depth and imagination of Hogwarts but with added emotional angst and growth right from the get-go.
A great read - one of my favourite books of the year.
"Tiny Pieces of Enid", inspired from the author's personal experience, is Tim’s second novel, and is a touching tale of living with dementia and the effect it has on the individual concerned and those whom they love. Living in a dementia home and having been separated from her beloved husband Roy, Enid feels a strong affinity with Olivia, a regular visitor to the home. If only she could work out why.
As Enid escapes from the home in search of Roy, Olivia and Enid’s bond develops and helps uncover painful truths about both their lives - Olivia’s in the present and Enid’s from the past. The two women’s lives become entwined, and a friendship develops.
A compelling and moving read - I’m really glad I got to spend some time with Enid!

Everyone needs an egg in their lives!?
Having finished "Isaac and the egg" by Bobby Palmer I urge you to read it. The story is unique and quirky, clever and heart warming. Bobby manages to sensitively encapsulate the raft of emotions that those overwhelmed with grief are forced to navigate. If you have ever lost someone you love, or if there has ever been a time in your life when you have lost your way, this book will resonate. But like a warm hug, it will leave you with an overriding feeling of hope and optimism that life continues one step at a time, and that time heals, even when life tests you to your limits.
No spoilers so that's all I'm going to say - except, just read the book - it will make you laugh and cry and at the end it will make you think…about what’s important.
A story of a very dysfunctional modern family…the mother who has a very passive aggressive style of child rearing and the father who is conspicuous by his long absences. Michael, the older brother is a force to be reckoned with, frequently lavishing his disapproval on his twin sisters, and then there is the secret that is never spoken about but has had an impact on them all.
Alice and Hanna are as different as chalk and cheese and their broken relationship mirrors their disappointments in work, in love and in the life they had imagined for themselves. Somehow, they must each find a way to navigate all that life throws at them, including a way to manage their dominant mother.
A book about complex family dynamics, mental health and the intricacies of sibling relationships - I really enjoyed it!
Mimi and Art Brotherton are siblings, bound together by the tragic death of their parents. Art is a mathematical genius and believes people are incapable of making rational decisions particularly where love is involved - that’s what algorithms are for! Then Mimi meets Frank and falls in love, but Art is convinced there is something about Frank that doesn’t add up and sets out to prove it…
A great debut novel, that delves into the many different aspects of love; the strength of love between siblings, old friends and the blossoming of romantic love. I really enjoyed the story - it’s moving and uplifting and I totally invested in the characters' lives. Above all it proves that in life, and in love, occasionally you have to jump in with both feet and take a chance…
Thirteen-year-old Skandar Smith has only ever wanted to be a unicorn rider. To be one of the lucky few selected to hatch a unicorn. To bond with it for life; to train together and race for glory; to be a hero.
But just as Skandar's dream is about to come true, things start to take a more dangerous turn than he could ever have imagined. A dark and twisted enemy has stolen the Island's most powerful unicorn - and as the threat grows ever closer, Skandar discovers a secret that could blow apart his world forever . .
This book is a compelling action packed story with real depth and epic adventure. A fantastic first book in a series which I think could rival Harry Potter one day...
Pat, Thelma and Liz, three retired school teachers, return as unlikely sleuths in J.M. Hall’s second novel. Someone is sending poison pen letters which are causing great upset in more ways than one, and the three friends decide that enough is enough and the perpetrator needs stopping before things get out of control! Once again they embark on a series of crime solving adventures, slowly piecing together their information and drawing their own conclusions.
Another warm and witty page turner from J.M. Hall with just the right amount of intrigue. Kept me hooked and guessing! A cosy crime with a sprinkling of humour and endearing characters - what’s not to like?
I have wanted to read this novel for ages, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It poses the question: what would you do if you could travel in time?
Customers of a particular coffee shop in a small back alley in Tokyo are tempted by that very dilemma. However, time travel does not come without its risks. There are strict rules to observe and whilst the lure of going back in the past is all consuming for some, those rules must be heeded, particularly the one which states customers must be back in the present before the coffee gets cold…
A moving, thought provoking book, ‘Before the Coffee Gets Cold’ is the first in a trilogy of books featuring the coffee shop and its time travelling experience. Really enjoyable!
Wow! What an amazing debut! Rootless is the heart wrenching love story of Efe and Sam who first meet as teenagers, become best friends and later marry. It is a novel about love, family and society and what happens when a couple who share so much have different dreams and ambitions. Can they ever resolve their differences, be happy and true to who they are and what they both want from life?
I loved this book, it’s tender, poignant and unforgettable - I couldn’t put it down!
For all you fans of cosy crime, this debut novel is a great read. Set in Yorkshire it features three retired teachers who meet every week at Thirsk Garden centre for coffee and a catch up. One day they bump into their ex-colleague, Topsy. By the next week Topsy is dead!
Unwittingly finding themselves involved in a murder case, and suspecting foul play, they set out to prove there’s more to Topsy’s death than initially thought.
You can’t help but get caught up in the friendship of the three main characters - warm and witty, their charm is infectious. Cleverly crafted, the plot twists and turns…and keeps you guessing until the very end!
It's not often that a book stops me in my tracks, but this and The Hare Shaped Hole are two wonderful picture books that did just that. Both deal gently with subjects that can be tricky to know how to talk about - childhood illness and bereavement.
The Boy with Flowers in his Hair by Jarvis is a fantastically poignant, beautifully illustrated book, about the power of friendship and how children will support and show kindness to each other if one is afflicted by serious illness.
Lavender Bathwater lives with her grandparents in their medieval cottage; her parents having vanished in mysterious circumstances years before. As her dreams start to reveal unspoken family secrets, her curiosity in solving the mystery of their disappearance grows and she enlists the help of her friends Fred and Alice. However, the arrival of a mysterious and seemingly sinister man with a dark past adds to the suspense, the depth of the mystery and maybe their own safety.
The story is brilliant, a real intrigue, with dark and light, it’s a mystery that spans centuries. It reminded me of Alan Garner’s writing, and is very well told; bringing together the power of architectural portals with the mysticism of powerful objects from ancient times, in this case amulets from Brigantia (an area lived in by the Brigantes before the Roman invasion, which centres on what is now Yorkshire)
A fantastic read by local author based on his grandmother's cottage. This book is only available in our shop - £9.99
When Felix makes a wish, he doesn’t expect to be hired by wishkeeper Rupus Beewinkle. Unknown to his family, Felix embarks on his mission to help save the town’s wishes from the Wishsnatcher who wants to destroy all hopes and dreams.
A charming story with lovely accompanying illustrations. Just the right amount of peril and adventure with a good helping of magic and wishes for readers 8+.
Published in paperback 2nd March
This has been on my TBR pile for ages! A dual timeline novel, it evolves gently, and slowly weaves together the stories of two women separated by centuries. Anna (present day) is concentrating on growing her gardening business and renovating her late Grandmother’s house, and Elizabeth Trebithick (1886) determined to fulfill her Father’s dying wish and continue his work as a plant hunter travels half-way around the world to discover a rare and miraculous flower. When Anna discovers a mysterious box buried deep within the wall cavity of her grandmother’s house, she embarks on a quest to find out more about its contents and discover the truth.
A great read portraying love and loss, adventure and new beginnings.
I loved this debut novel - portraying family and home, and the secrets sometimes hidden within both. The book explores the complex relationships between mothers and daughters, and how hard it is not to put your own expectations on those of your children. It also highlights the dynamics between siblings…
Margo and Richard’s love was epic but doomed, and when it falls apart it has far reaching implications for their three girls Rachel, Imogen and Sasha. Margo’s silence about her relationship with Richard is preventing all three Garnett Girls from finding true happiness in their adult lives.
Can the family find a way to move forward and resolve the past?
Why not read more and find out…
In 1886, a respectable young woman must acquire a husband. But Violet wants to tear up the notion of being respectable and carve her own future as a professional and independent artist.
The interventions of her mother and the machinations of psychologist Dr Rastrick conspire to unhinge Violet, and she is confined to an asylum with little memory of how she got there.
All she is certain of, is that she is perfectly sane and her aspirations attainable.
This gothic novel is gripping and the characters so well drawn... it was all too easy to fear and revile Dr Rastrick, and to anxiously fear for young Violet and whether she would ever escape the Doctor's clutches.
This book is a deep and dark psychological thriller. Available in HB £16.99
A four-year-old girl goes missing in plain sight outside her nursery in Oxford. DI Ray Wilkins leads the hunt for the girl with his new partner.
Meanwhile, his ex-partner, Ryan Wilkins is now a security guard at a local van hire company. However, a chance meeting with an old school mate leads Ryan in to an illegal investigation which bring the unlikely duo back together.
Will they save the girl and bring the criminal to justice?
The first book of this series A Killing in November was brilliant; this sequel is even better. Fast paced, with suspense, twists and the unlikely charm of Oxford's youngest and most gifted DI.
Simon Mason has rapidly become one of my favourite authors.
This debut novel is an amazing read, I devoured it and got completely caught up in the lives of Kate, Violet and Altha. The stories of the three women, spanning different periods of history are woven together brilliantly through the book. A bewitching read celebrating female empowerment, resilience and strength - I couldn't put it down!
Out now in hardback!

She and Grampa work together, interviewing dodgy witnesses and finding clues, all the while maintaining Bonnie’s alter ego as Montgomery Bonbon, even when, at one point the moustache goes AWOL and has to be replaced by a hairy caterpillar!
